What is Physical Therapy?
Physical therapy is the examination, treatment, and instruction of human beings to detect, assess, prevent, correct, alleviate, and limit physical disability . . . for the purpose of reducing the incidence and severity of physical disability, movement dysfunction, bodily malformations and pain, as according to APTA (American Physical Therapy Association) in 1986.
Physical Therapy has grown over the years (Total history less than a century too young anyway!) in terms of Education, Practice, Research and Administration. Education in Physical Therapy evolved from a “Technical” knowledge base to a much more advanced “Professional” and “Skill-oriented” Training. Practice patterns in Physical Therapy also changed for the better from “Referral-based” practice to now being equipped with evaluation and screening abilities as for “autonomous” or “first-contact practice”. With Imposed demands and growing scientific technology for evaluation and treatment, the field of Physical therapy saw rapid progress in Research with Doctorate programs offered around the globe and increasing international publications in the form of textbooks and indexed journals. The Regulatory bodies in Physical Therapy starting from World Confederation of Physical Therapy (www.wcpt.org), to various national bodies have made their effort towards framing the required level of professional up gradation and development.
Physical Therapy has specializations in Musculoskeletal (Orthopaedics), Neurologic, Cardiorespiratory and Community Rehabilitation as major fields of study, however much needed specialties like Sports, Manual Therapy, Hand Rehabilitation, Industrial Health, Women’s Health, Fitness, Geriatric Rehabilitation, Pediatric Neurorehabilitation, Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, Intensive Care Therapy also are gaining in their recognition and application with other professions in a Multidisciplinary Healthcare Delivery System.
This is the current global scenario in the field of Physical Therapy!Global scenario apart!
Physical Therapy in India too has its roots from traditional, non-professional rather technical origins however, with evolution of science and technology, the field is growing.
